The sleep intervention platform, ‘ 安眠加油站 ‘, is a personalized, digital, self-paced, and interactive programme delivered through a smartphone App that has been established and tested by our project team.
The digital intervention programme is specifically modified and established based on the well-established treatment protocol for managing sleep problems in young people.
It consists of a maximum of 6-week sequential modules delivered weekly with different elements to engage the users, such as animated videos, case vignettes, narration, practice exercises, quizzes, homework assignment, and practical tools to help parents to establish good sleep habits with their children (e.g., sleep diary and worksheets).
The treatment period varies from 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the age of the child and the complexity and severity of the child’s symptoms.
Each module consists of approximately 20-30 mins of psychoeducational animations, text materials, and homework assignments.
The main treatment components include (1) psychoeducation about sleep and sleep problems in children and adolescents and in the context of common neurodevelopmental disorders, (2) psychoeducation about common types of SENs, 3) sleep hygiene education, (4) psychoeducation about circadian rhythm, (5) sleep-focused behavioral strategies in young children (e.g., bedtime routine, bedtime fading) and adolescents (e.g., stimulus control, sleep restriction), (6) relaxation strategies, (7) cognitive restructuring (targeting dysfunctional cognitions) and (8) relapse prevention.
Vignettes and examples included in the platform will be designed specifically to cater to the needs of the children with SEN.
As our digital platform allows a high flexibility in modifying the treatment content and sequence, the intervention can be modified to suit the child’s presentations and needs.
Based on the child’s sleep profile as well as their primary complaint and comorbid condition (e.g.
ADHD vs.
ASD), a recommended list of treatment materials will be specified.
Thus, each user might go through a distinct treatment pathway (e.g., treatment duration and content might be different across different children) in this integrated platform and has individualized treatment package stored in the platform.
The application control management system provides online analytics, which allows us to monitor individual’s participation during the intervention by assessing their progress and provision of personalised feedback.
